Semiotics

Semiotics- Things you need to know if you want to design anything that is supposed to mean something. The study of signs, the production of meaning.

When you design you need to know what things mean. For example: leaf, you can have an icon of a leaf, you can have a symbol such as just the word LEAF, an index that connects to the word, or you can have metasymbol meanings, symbols that have a greater meaning to them.

In doing this you can show the representamen (the visual that grabs you), the interpretant (the meaning that you get from it), and object (what it is supposed to represent). Seeing becomes understating and that becomes what it all means. When you can get all that down, then you come up with design that will help you support the meaning you are tiring to get across to the other person.

Classes that happen and classes to come...

Since I am transfer student (which I probable said a lot on here already, sorry to repeat myself), I have already taken all my basic general education classes. Not to say most of my basic art class, give or take a few. I have already taken Design I, Drawing I, II, Painting I, II, III, Watercolors, Art Appreciation (which is called something else here), and Figure Drawing at my other school (some of the classes did not transfer over here with me). As you see I pretty much have taken all my basic art classes that is needed for my major.

Now going to UCM, I am taking Intro. Graphic Design and Illustration, Typography, Art Servery I, and Design II. I am not quite sure what I'm taking this next semester. I do know I will be taking Art Servery II, and Design III; other than that I will just have to see what falls into my lap.

Inks, brushes and so on....

Yesterday in class, we discuss what type of tool to use for graphic design. I had really on idea, until class. In class we talk about not drawing with pencils any more but pens; and to make marks that are bold. Not what my drawing teacher would like to hear at my other school, but that's ok. I am use to making bold marks and the pen thing. I will just have to get better with using it. Further more we also learn to use inks and brushes to make marks. This should be fun. I played around with it in my watercolor class later year. In all this should be different, but fun experience in the long run.
